And the award for “the box art that causes the most sleepless nights” goes to….(drumroll)…..”Dementium II” (applause) Well done Southpeak, you have created a game with a “Mature” ESRB and attached a cover to it that will prevent 100% of parents from buying it for their child. But regardless of how f**ked-up this cover may be or what controversial boundaries it tip-toes on, credit must be given. The concept alone is beyond our darkest imagination, while the vivid detail affects a mind-numbing visual. Overall, this piece of art may be grotesque, but at the same time, utterly magnificent.

Welcome to a game you’ll never buy, which is too bad because it looks as if so much hard work and time has been put into it. As expected of course, but hmm, I swear I have seen this game before… Oh, yeah, it’s called Call of Duty, and they’ve made about a thousand of them. How ’bout we not try and compete with a multi billion dollar franchise? It’s too bad, because the website is quite a gem. Creativity and originality are the only things that lack, and yes, those are important components, but just enough is done here to make this an enjoyable experience.

How do you market the 97th “Sims” installment while finding a way to provide something fun, new, and exciting for a target audience that was still in diapers when the original version came out? As for this debut trailer for “The Sims Medieval” it’s as simple as having a quick changing Donald Faison stand in front a green screen and act like a fool, which in the end, is downright hilarious. An intensely rich and fun timeline feature carries this site about as far as it can go. Sure it looks good, it’s organized, great colors, but what makes it unique? Nothing. Swap the background, change the colors, replace the pictures, and you have yourself any other game website out there. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not knocking on the site, it’s well put together and accomplishes everything it needs to. But for such a large game campaign, nothing excites me or the user about visiting it. Interactivity is limited to none, and any form of visual movement is nonexistent.
Just like in school, you follow the guidelines, you get the base/expected grade. Go above and beyond the expectations, you get an outstanding grade. Status quo is no longer acceptable.

Some images are burned into our memories with no chance of ever getting rid of. Most of these images are unforgettable because of their horrible or disgusting nature, like walking in on your parents or witnessing the birth of a younger sibling. However, there are some memories that are stuck with us because they affected us on a deeper, more emotional level. This “Resistance: Fall of Man” box art falls into that category.
Sure we have seen plenty of shots of barren battlefields, war torn soldiers, and bombed out towns, but never have we seen this; a replica WWII helmet containing a non-human, four-eyed, “Chimera” skull. We’ve lived our whole lives knowing exactly what a human head looks like and most of us could do a pretty good job of drawing a human skull solely from memory. But throw on an extra set of eyes and some gnarly teeth, and you have produced something that shatters this paradigm thousands of years in the making. By positioning this mind-numbing image front and center, good luck noticing anything else on this cover, which might as well be blank.

In one corner we have Hawke, our refugee turned city hero, and in the other corner, a human-devil-goat with super strength. As the climax of the battle approaches, the crowd goes wild, “Hawke! Hawke! Hawke!” Hawke digs deep and without the use of a weapon, rips his opponent apart with a bit of violent sorcery. And to finish the viewer off, our champion saunters toward us with enough swagger to impress the most gangster of gangsters.

This box art is one hot steriodal mess. And while baseball stars, NFL pros, and Schwarzenegger himself drop like flies to steroid scandals, we continue to try to keep our kids away from using these illegal muscle enhancers. I would say that this cover isn’t doing a good job of making superhuman strength and unobtainable muscle size look unattractive, but then again, something tells me this this game won’t make it into that many houses.

As we can see from this cover, Tiger Woods ’12 is leaving it traditional look behind and heading in a new direction. We have all heard how “different” this game will be from those before it. EA claims it will host a whole new style of gameplay as well as give gamers the option to play the world famous Augustan National golf course. Therefore, throwing “Masters” upfront is a nice added touch and fuels our craving to hit the links.

When the majority of gamers put “making woohoo” as their main objective, it doesn’t matter what time era the game takes place in. Nevertheless, this latest “Sims” installment shows us (and when I say us, I mean girls) a variety of characters, actions, and attire we can look forward to implementing, unless our simoleons runs out.

As simple as this box art initially looks, the haunting symbolism and propaganda seeping out of it gives us all a shocking reality check. The “what if’s” alone will attract gamers young and old to the new-age campaign story this game brings to the surface.
