Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary – Launch Trailer

loading
Our Rating:
4.1

The first 40 seconds of this launch trailer moves along nicely with great music and adequate narration (by Captain Jacob Keyes, if you noticed), but once it transitions into a faster paced, level montage the audience becomes alienated. We’ve already played this game, beaten its campaign, and spent countless hours LAN’ing it up with our friends, which is why we cannot associate with this trailer. It’s understood that the new anniversary edition supports better graphics, a remastered campaign, and Xbox LIVE, so why don’t we see that in this launch trailer? Don’t market us a refurbished “Halo” unless we can easily see why it’s better than then one we have sitting at home.

This Handpainted Throwback Screams “Perfect 10″

As far as Perfect 10′s go, it’s not always about giant, in-your-face graphics, edgy designs, or impressive concept art. In this case, Ico went old school and had their director, Fumito Ueda, hand paint a beautiful still shot of the game.

Evoking feelings of wonder, fantasy, and adventure, this brilliant design emphasizes space and scale. As our protagonist leads his princess to safety and away from the evil castle, we relate to his vulnerability and exposure to whatever it is that chases him. Run Ico…run.

Battlefield 3 BillboardCheck out this reader submitted video which showcases a massive “Battlefield 3″ billboard hanging off the side of a building. EA wasn’t lying when they said they were going to spend $100 million on marketing! Thanks for the submission and keep them coming! Just don’t let the cops catch you snapping shots while driving!

Skyrim posterA stoic hero standing bravely atop a rocky mountaintop double fisting a dagger and sword would alone be enough to satisfy. But throw in a spine tingling dragon tail serpentining its way into an foggy, ominously dark canvas and suddenly you’ve got yourself a poster that outranks all other on the 1-to-badass scale. “Skyrim” drops today and is likely to post some serious numbers, which will prove that its once cult-like following has truly become a world wide phenomenon.

Assassin’s Creed: Revelations – Launch Trailer

Our Rating:
6.7

If video games had red band trailers this would fall into that category not because of profanity or sex, but because of its awesomely gruesome assassination sequences. Watching Ezio repeatedly stab other characters in the face, neck, back, and stomach may be nauseating to some, but with an epic score unfolding throughout, this launch trailer transforms these murders into art. While not on par with the top launch trailers of the fall (“Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception” and “Batman: Arkham City“), “AC: Revelations” definitely lands its mark one week before its release.

Saints Row: The Third – Music Video Trailer

Wow, judging by the the amount of sex in this trailer (a presumably cheap marketing tactic, aka “the easy way out”) it almost seems like THQ is getting worried about a less-than-expected reception “The Third” will receive after it drops next week. The song itself is awful and is attached to a random montage of in-game footage which carries no weight at all, aside from the sex of course. Don’t worry, if you don’t make it through to the end, nothing will be missed.

Saints Row The Third PosterSaints Row The Third Bikini GirlsIf your a fan of the “Saints” franchise, then your going to love this one sheet promoting the gang of perfectly chiseled protagonists. Looking to take back the town of Steelport from their rival gang, The Syndicate, The Saints come prepared with an arsenal of weaponry, providing a seductive virtual world where nerds are kings — and the game’s uber-sexy marketing campaign captures it to “t”. Saints Row The Third Bikini GirlsTHQ has carefully constructed their characters around a stimulating sense of swagger, which is something most gamers never had (and probably never will). And like the real world, fantasy life incorporated within these games Saints Row The Third Bikini Girlssupport the direct association between confidence –> good looks –> and getting the girl. “The Third” continues to do what it takes to sell its title, whether that means releasing trailers full of sexualized characters and gameplay to providing free bikini car washes in downtown LA (see surrounding photos).

Showcasing the land and people of Skyrim is the brilliant concept behind this trailer, but its mediocre presentation makes for a dull, non-climactic preview with dialog that will put you to sleep. Even hardcore “Elder Scrolls” fans will find this unsettling. But what’s really sad is that “Elder Scrolls” can pull of a much better “setting presentation/revealing” trailer. They have before.

With its release date just one week away, there’s no doubt you have already seen this box art popping up around the media on billboards, magazine ads, and TV spots. Featuring two of the three main, playable characters, Ezio and Altaïr, this cover exudes the same stealth assassin persona synonymous with the “AC” franchise. But two hooded characters infront of simple glowing backdrop is not enough make this image special.
