Classic, vintage, nostalgic, all appropriate words to describe this throw-back box art from the early 90s. And now, almost two decades after its release, this extraordinary cover design deserves the recognition it has yet to be awarded.

A sand dune and two plumes of smoke on the horizon, that’s it, nothing more, nothing less. You would think such a simple idea wouldn’t get very far, and if it did there would be additions or improvements along the way. But as we see here, this basic three color design carries more depth and evokes more emotion then, at the time could ever have been expected from this Westwood Studios RTS. Then again, this game did lay the foundation for later RTS giants such as Warcraft, Starcraft, and Command & Conquer, which basically proves that Dune II was well ahead of the industry in more ways than one.
